Google Chat: Degradation for Windows Users of 32-bit Chrome

Issue Symptoms: Degradation

There are performance issues with Google Chat within Gmail using the Windows 32-bit version of Chrome (84.0.4147.89). ITS has reported this to Google, and recommend these workarounds:

    The Collaboration Services team continues to work directly with Google technical support engineers to further troubleshoot this issue.
    We will provide more details as we continue to work with Google.
     
  • 5:00 PM - 7/28/2020
    We have escalated this issue with Google, and continue to engage with them on this important issue.
     
  • 4:00 PM - 7/27/2020
    We have created and posted a knowledge base article on the best way to handle this issue.
    Google has stated that this behavior is related to the 32-bit version of Chrome on Windows.
    Users should either upgrade to the 64-bit version of Chrome or use one of the other workarounds listed above.
     
  • 12:00 PM - 7/24/2020
    We continue to work with Google to troubleshoot this issue, and will share more information as we are able.
    If you are affected, please use the workarounds listed until this issue is addressed.
